Within the past decade, smoking has become less and less welcomed in public areas, and college campuses are no exception. First and second-hand smoking repercussions aside, many non-smokers view the activity as a nuisance. It’s not just tobacco cigarette smoking that’s getting flak anymore, though. Some college campuses have recently included e-cigarettes in their no-smoking ban. As e-cigarette retailers, we want our smokers to be aware of any existing e-cigarette rules and regulations. After looking into the matter, we’ve got the details about this trend.

Just last week, MU (the University of Missouri) announced their student-initiated decision to place a campus-wide ban on smoking. MU isn’t the only school to take a stand against smoking, though. They will be “…joining more than 1,100 other smoke-free colleges and universities in the United States,” reported a university-issued article. So, what’s got college campuses fuming about smoking?

The Reasoning

A number of studies have proven the negative side effects of first and second-hand smoking. Heart disease, cancer, and respiratory complications are just a few of the threats individuals exposed to tobacco cigarette smoke have a higher risk of experiencing. With so many negative implications, we understand why colleges want to ban tobacco smoking. But why ban e-cigarettes?

When explaining why e-cigarettes were banned along with other smoke-emitting materials on the MU campus, the university explained that e-cigarettes could be confused with other smoking materials. Simply put: it’s all about sending a message. Advocates of the campus smoking ban want people to quit smoking nicotine and tobacco altogether.

The (UCSD) University of California, San Diego explained their motives for banning e-cigarettes on campus saying, “Aside from being addictive, nicotine itself is toxic to humans. The nicotine vapor in e-cigarettes may send a more concentrated dose of nicotine into e-cigarette “smokers” bodies.”

Implications of Smoking Ban

Although there won’t be any legal action taken against smokers on MU’s campus, offenders could face disciplinary consequences. And it’s not just the college administration issuing this ban — it’s part of the student body. For the first time in a long time, college students are saying “no” to smoking. Because of this united front, MU has actually created some cessation programs in an effort to encourage campus members to quit smoking.

As this movement continues to spread to other college campuses, it’s important that e-cigarette smokers are mindful of any smoking restrictions that pertain to e-cigarettes. When in public, always try to be mindful of other non-smokers.
